Dem Bones

Some bones lie inside fences; some rest outside.
Some bones are encircled with stone; some are polished like marble.
Some bones lie together; some scatter, lost.
Some bones are tossed, some are honored.
All bones become dust, wherever they lie.

These photos are from the Silver Terrace Cemetery in Virginia City, Nevada.  After photographing inside the cemetery, on one of my visits I decided to walk outside the fence and see if there were any good angles looking in.  It’s a large complex, with mines and many tailings nearby.  Coming around the far side, I found several patches of deer bones.  I believe they are deer because some of the leg bones still had hooves attached.  I thought it was really interesting to consider the casual way the deer bones were strewn around compared with the elaborate internments inside the cemetery.

Some of my contact sheets:

Thanks to photographer and professor Lesley Louden for her help editing these photos.

Did you know bones can be transparent?
